WILSON YOUNG ROYAL
By Ruth Deason & Wanda Craft
Wilson Young Royal has been quite a challenge. He and his brother, William, moved from Dooly, Georgia to Alabama, back to Georgia back again to Alabama and on to Texas. They lived in different counties each time and the last name was spelled differently on almost every census. There were some quite creative spelling variations of the name Royal. Here is what we’ve gathered to date:
Wilson Young Royal, son of Raiford Royal and Nancy Odom, was born 24 Feb 1827 in Dooly, Georgia, and died between 1900 and 1908 in Texas. He married Eliza Elmira White 09 Jul 1848. She was born 27 Oct 1827 in Georgia, and also died between 1900 and 1908 in Texas.
Minnie Phurrough, daughter of William Wesley Royal, always held that Wilson's name was Silas Wilson Royal and that his youngest son, Wilson C. was Silas Wilson Royal, Jr.
We find them in the following census records:
1850 Talbot County, Georgia census, Dist. 24, page 288

Royals, Wilson 24 farmer Georgia
Elmira 23 Georgia

Elmira 40 F house keeper Georgia
Thomas 16 M farm hand Georgia
John 20 M farm hand Georgia
J?ne 18 F farm hand Georgia
Willie 17 M farm hand Georgia
Lump 12 M farm hand Georgia
Sissie 10 F Georgia
The female listed under John looks like June or Jane. It's probably John's wife. However her name shows up elsewhere as Martha Ellen Pruitt. The son, Willie, of course, was William, Lump was a nickname for Alonza and Martha was called Sis or Sissie. The biggest puzzle here is that the two youngest children, Wilson and Mary Adelaide are not listed with the family. We can't find them with any other family, either. The proof that they actually are children of Wilson and Elmira is the family Bible owned by Phillip Burrow http://www.TheirJourneySouthward.com. Also on the 1900 census, Elmira states she was the mother of seven children with five living. John had died a young man and son, Wilson, died in 1899. All children accounted for. Another interesting fact here is in 1869 Wilson Royal had four children in the poor school in Upson County, Georgia. John, Thomas and Willie were all past school age leaving Lon, Martha, Wilson, and Mary Adelaide. The poor school records can be seen here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaupson/1866page.htm.
1880 - The family has not been found on the 1880 census. We keep trying, but so far, no luck. William Ransom Royal, Wilson's brother, was living in St. Clair County, Alabama in 1880. Wilson and Elmira were probably there as well, but not necessarily so.

John M. Royal, born 15 Sep 1850 died young. He married Ellen Pruitt 03 Jan 1870.
Royal, Wilson Y. Feb. 1827 73 farmer rents farm GA/NC/NC
Elmira Oct. 1828 71 GA/GA/GA
They had been married 52 years. Elmira was the mother of seven children with five living.
They disappear after this. They are not found on the Texas death index which starts in 1908 leading us to believe they died sometime between the latter half of 1900 and 1908. It's possible they came back to Alabama, but at their age unlikely, 70s being much older than it is now. Their youngest child, Mary Adelaide, who married George Harless, moved to Texas around the same time.
Children of Wilson Young Royal and Eliza White are:
1. John M. Royal, born 15 Sep 1850; died Unknown. He married Elen Pruitt 03 Jan 1870.
2. William Wesley Royal, born 14 Dec 1852 in Georgia; died 08 May 1919 in Clay County, Alabama.
3. Thomas Jesse Royal, born 12 Mar 1855 in Georgia; died 03 Jan 1922 in Jefferson County, Alabama.
4. Lon C Royal, born 12 Mar 1856 in Georgia; died 23 Sep 1927 in Childersburg, Talladega County, Alabama.
5. Martha Royal, born 21 Jul 1859; died Unknown in near Hackneyville, Tallapoosa Co., Alabama.
6. Mary Adelaid Royal, born 03 Jan 1863; died 17 Oct 1942 in Miller County, Arkansas.
7. Wilson C. Royal born 14 Mar 1864 in Georgia died 1899 in Alabama
Generation No. 2
- William Wesley Royal was born 14 Dec 1852 in Georgia, and died 08 May 1919 in Clay County, Alabama. He married (1) Nancy Ann Gilbert 27 Oct 1874. She was born about 1855 in Georgia, and died 1893. He married (2) Sally Bramlett 16 Aug 1905. She died before 1910. He married (3) Eliza Bowman 23 Jan 1910 in Sylacauga, Talladega County, Alabama.
According to Albert Phurrough, great grandson of William Wesley Royal, he went to church in a surrey, probably not a common site among the farmers in those days. William had begun to go blind in his later years. He is buried in Brownsville, Clay County, Alabama.
Lon C Royal was born 12 Mar 1856 in Georgia, and died 23 Sep 1927 in Childersburg, Talladega County, Alabama.
He married Dicen Sparkling Hand 29 May 1884 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, daughter of Thomas B. Hand. She was born 28 Oct 1869 in Alabama, and died 14 Jan 1933 in Childersburg, Talladega County, Alabama. Autry Royal Norred's family bible gives Lon's (Alonza) birth year as 1855, his death certificate says 1856, the 1900 census says 1857and the 1910 census says 1858. We would assume the death certificate is correct.
Thomas Jesse Royal was born 12 Mar 1855 in Georgia, and died 03 Jan 1922 in Jefferson County, Alabama. He married Frances Elva Harless 16 Nov 1879 in St. Clair County, Alabama. She was born 23 Aug 1860, and died 11 Apr 1931.
Lon's arm was cut off in a sawmill accident. It was still hanging on when he pulled it from the saw, so he put his arm back in and finished it off himself. He then drove himself by horse and buggy several miles into town to have the doctor stitch it up. (Story handed down through the family.)
We first find Lon and Dicen in the 1900 Talladega County, Alabama census - twice!

They had been married 16 years. Dicen was the mother of nine children with all nine living.
Notice the year and month differences in the two records. Why are there two records? Were they in the process of moving when the census taker came around and he caught them at both places? Or was their home on the district line and they were inadvertently counted twice?
Dicen's name was, if I read family Bible writing correctly, Dicen Sparkling Hand.
To save space, we won't show all the census records for this large family.
Lon and Dicen's oldest child, Arrie, died in 1918, but Dicen didn't want their father raising them. We don't know why, but one theory has to do with his American Indian mother or grandmother. So Lon and Dicen legally adopted the four Walker grandchildren and gave them the Royal name.
Lon and Dicen's son, Talmadge, was lost at sea in WWI. They were devastated, but practical the people that they were, they used the money from his death to buy land in Childersburg. They owned land in town and in the country. It is believed they also owned rental property in Sylacauga and Childersburg. It was the farm in the country where Lon had his sawmill, the one that took his arm.
Lon was buried 24 Sep 1927, in Childersburg, Talladega County, Alabama

6. Mary Adelaid Royal (Wilson Y.) was born 03 Jan 1863, and died 17 Oct 1942 in Miller County, Arkansas. She married George W. Harless 1883. He was born Oct 1864, and died Unknown in Dallas, Texas.
7. Wilson C. Royal (Wilson Y.) was born 14 Mar 1864 in Georgia, and died 1899 in Alabama. He married Sarah Elizabeth Danford 21 Oct 1883 in Clay County, Alabama. She was born 09 Nov 1854 in Louisiana, and died 13 Feb 1936 in Talladega Co., AL. Wilson C. died in 1899 and left Sarah with all those children. Paul's mother, Tishie, and her siblings had to go to work at Avondale Mills in Sycamore to support the family. Tishie was only 7-8 yrs. old and she had to stand on a box to be able to work as she was not big enough to reach the machinery. Remember, this was before the child labor laws.
Wilson C. Royal has been very elusive. The “C” in his name appeared in the Family Bible of Wilson Young Royal and on his and Sarah's marriage license. We have been unable to find out what the C stands for. We cannot place him on any census with his family. We did not know his death date until we found his photo that belonged to Sarah. It says "Our Dad" Wilson Royal died 1899-- Tishie and Lena. The search for his grave is still in progress. Note the family resemblance of Wilson to his Uncle William Ransom Royal. W.R. Royal's picture published in Royal Family Newsletter 1 Jan. 2007.
It was passed down in the family that Wilson taught music and traveled around in this profession.
Notes for Sarah Elizabeth Danford:
On the 1930 census of Sylacauga, Talladega Co., Alabama, Sarah Royal was listed with her daughter, Tishie Deason and family:
The 1880 Tallapoosa County census shows Sarah Danford and her siblings living with their father, John. The mother's name is crossed out and "dead" is written on the line. This family was living next door to William Royal(s), brother to Wilson Royal who Sarah later married.
The 1900 Talladega County census shows Sarah Royal living alone with the 7 children district of Emauhee, Talladega County, Sycamore, Alabama.
Children of Wilson Royal and Sarah Danford are:
1. James Luther Royal, born 17 Sep 1884 in Alabama; died Feb 1928 in Jefferson County, Alabama.

Wesley denied this but Coleman came up and stabbed him, slicing the bib of his overalls off. Tishie managed to get Wesley home. Wesley was sent the next day by train to a hospital out of town. Likely Anniston, AL but the paper says Talladega, AL and he succumbed to his wounds. He is buried in Sycamore, AL.
